영어 도치 문장 정리 (부정어, only, hardly, so 등과의 도치)

영어 도치는 보통 강조나 특정한 조건을 나타내기 위해 주어와 동사의 어순을 바꾸는 것을 말합니다. 시험과 실전 영어에서도 자주 등장하는 문법 포인트입니다.

1. 부정어 도치

부정어 부사(Never, Rarely, Seldom, Little, Hardly, Not only 등)가 문두에 올 때, 도치가 발생합니다.

• 형태: 부정어 + 조동사/Be동사 + 주어 + 본동사

 

예문:

• Never have I seen such a beautiful place. (나는 그런 아름다운 곳을 본 적이 없다.)
• Hardly had he arrived when it started to rain. (그가 도착하자마자 비가 내렸다.)
• Not only did she sing, but she also danced. (그녀는 노래뿐 아니라 춤도 췄다.)

 

 

2. only + 부사구/접속사/시간표현 도치

Only로 시작하는 부사구나 시간 표현이 문두에 올 때도 도치가 발생합니다.

• 형태: Only + 부사구 + 조동사/Be동사 + 주어 + 본동사

 

예문:

• Only after the meeting did I understand the problem. (회의가 끝난 후에야 문제를 이해했다.)
• Only then did she realize her mistake. (그제서야 그녀는 자신의 실수를 깨달았다.)
• Only by working hard can you succeed. (열심히 노력해야만 성공할 수 있다.)

 

 

3. Hardly / Scarcely / No sooner ~ when/before

이런 표현들은 ‘~하자마자’라는 의미로 쓰이며 도치를 동반합니다.

• 형태: Hardly/Scarcely/No sooner + had + 주어 + 과거분사 + when/before + 주어 + 동사

 

예문:

• Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang. (내가 막 앉자마자 전화가 울렸다.)
• No sooner had she left than it began to snow. (그녀가 떠나자마자 눈이 내리기 시작했다.)

 

 

4. So / Neither / Nor + 조동사 + 주어

So는 긍정 동의, Neither/Nor는 부정 동의를 표현하며 도치가 발생합니다.

• I am tired. So am I. (나도 그래.)
• He doesn't like coffee. Neither do I. (나도 안 좋아한다.)
